Textile Designer

Christina Chortis

As a textile designer I like to explore and push my designs. I like to test the limits of different fabrics and ways I can treat them. Some of my mistakes become happy accidents and are often key pieces in a collection.

I am inspired by Abstract art, especially Pablo Picasso and Jackson Pollock’s free style. Continuous line drawings and artwork that really plays on the mind and makes you think about what’s going on. I am drawn to the organic shapes and natural forms of botanicals. Delicate outlined details against larger surfaces and striking colours. There is so much variety in nature, and this is why I am drawn to it.

Having contrast in my work is a must! From theme through to final outcomes. I find it exciting matching and pairing textile techniques and colours that aren’t usually seen together and turning that into something beautiful. I work with many different styles of techniques such as painting (acrylic and ink), screen printing, hand embroidery, sewing, photography, laser cutting, digital printing and knitting. I love the freedom to dabble in different mediums and explore how I can use them together. Its such a challenge to make complete opposites work together in a harmoniously way, a challenge I love.

Hello!

I’m a creative designer who thrives on experimenting and pushing the boundaries of what’s possible. With over seven years of experience, I see design as a constantly evolving process- one where curiosity often leads to unexpected results. Some of my favourite pieces started out as happy accidents, proving that a little risk can lead to something truly exciting.

I am inspired by the abstract freedom of artists like Picasso and Pollock, I’m drawn to continuous line work, surreal forms, and bold visual contrasts. I always find myself drawn to nature. The organic shapes and delicate details are continuously influencing my aesthetic.

Contrast is essential to my creative process. I find energy and beauty in pairing unlikely techniques and colour palettes. Turning opposites into cohesive, harmonious designs. My practice draws from a wide range of techniques including painting (gouache and ink), screen printing, hand embroidery, sewing, photography, laser cutting, digital printing, and knitting. I love the freedom of working across multiple mediums, embracing the challenge of allowing them work together in unexpected ways.
